Build A Cat

Inspired by Karin Akesdotter 😊

I will probably never make this card design again because it was te-di-ous! I guess if I used some faces that were just a single color that would help but it just took a long time to put together all those little pieces and figure out the colors and everything.

One thing I did that made it take even longer was that I cut the “bottom level” face piece out like normal, and then I cut it again with the “top level” face piece to create a piece that only had the nose and mouth on it. By doing that I was able to inlay all the pieces so that everything was flush on one level. I really wanted to do it that way so that the face looked a little more “realistic”, instead of having pieces stacked on top of each other where you could easily see that it was layered and not all one piece. It was totally not necessary but I appreciated the end result.

The layers I had for each face were:

  • Bottom level: full face piece with eyes open
  • Next level: head piece (with stripes or plain)
  • Next level: full face piece with eyes open, cut like normal and then cut a second time with the “cutout/top level” face piece to create a small piece with only the nose and mouth
  • Layer the eye and ear backing pieces behind everything
  • Cut out the full face piece again in both the eye and ear colors and use those tiny eye and ear pieces to inlay into the wells created by the backing pieces, so that everything is flush and one level
