Light Up Jack-o-Lantern Card

This was my first time ever making a light up card and I like how it turned out.

I used the Pear Blossom Press Twinkle Light LED lights for this card. They were very easy to work with so that was good for my first attempt at a light up card. I think most other craft lights require you to actually set up your own circuits…? Maybe? I’ve never used them so I’m only going off what I think I’ve seen in videos. But these lights are ready to go. They flash on and off in a kind of irregular pattern so that sometimes they’re flashing at different times and sometimes they end up flashing all at the same time. I couldn’t decide if I would have preferred lights that just stayed on constantly or not, but I do think the flashing on and off at least makes the card more interesting.

The lights came in a 2-pack and when I was trying to arrange them and tape them down on the back of my card, I accidentally pulled one of the wires too hard I guess, and it disconnected and stopped working. I tried to fix it but it was way too small and delicate, so I ended up just having to use the other set. I was glad I had another set there ready to use but it was a bummer and an expensive mistake to make, only getting one light up card from that purchase, because it was not cheap. So I will probably not make any more light up cards for awhile, unless I find a lower-priced set somewhere.

Here’s a look at how I arranged things on the back of the card:

I wanted the front of the card to all be one even layer so I used foam tape on the back to create the well for the battery across the whole card. (I added more foam tape after this picture covering where the wires were.)

For the background I took the Spooky Forest Backdrop and cut it apart to make my own landscape version. I’m actually surprised Lawn Fawn hasn’t created their own landscape version of this backdrop yet because the portrait version is a popular choice for fall and winter cards.

I used the backing pieces for the pumpkins to cut the openings in my card where the light would show through, but I actually wish I hadn’t done that. If I were making this card again I would use only the little pumpkin faces to cut the holes instead. This is because when the room lights were off and I tested this card in the dark, the lights coming through the card showed the whole shape of those backing pieces and I didn’t like how it looked. I think having the light come through only the little pumpkin faces would’ve been better. But it was fine.
